The industry peddles polished illusions, but some songs cut straight to the bone with honest storytelling. Big Sexy’s “Michigan,” the latest single from their upcoming album My Temporary Silence, released July 18, 2025, is a heartfelt ode to resurrection, blending slow rock’s introspective depth with country’s authentic twang. Gary Maccagnone and Alex Goroshko, the duo behind Big Sexy, deliver a track that feels like a homecoming, drawing from their transatlantic collaboration—Maccagnone in the US, Goroshko in Kyiv.
This is music that rolls like an open road, carrying the weight of loss and the lift of renewal.
Big Sexy has received positive reception for their past tracks, with critics noting Maccagnone’s charismatic vocals and Goroshko’s guitar work that shines in blending genres like rock, folk, pop, and Americana. Songs from their 2023 album River of Shame, such as “River of Shame,” “Samantha’s Song,” “Pretty Girl Blues,” “Burning,” and “The Admiral’s Daughter,” have been praised for their funk-infused rocker vibe and lyrical depth. “Michigan” marks a great step up, shifting to a true American sound, an homage to US music that could only be made there, per their evolving catalog.
The song opens with the Oscoda horizon looking unreal, Maccagnone’s vocals effortless and natural, evoking a drive to the character’s father’s funeral under a puffy orange and pink mist of clouds. The verses unfold like a ballad, storytelling at its best, “It was eight years ago when she set me free,” the lyrics confess, a quiet ache that builds to the big chorus’s catchy lift: “Ooo Michigan, my old, old, old friend, I’m back again, Lord of Mercy, I need you now like I needed you then.”
Goroshko’s hand keeps the song in Big Sexy’s frames while opening new territory, with a soundscape that has a ‘70s vibe and a pinch of Eagles, perfect for the road or radio. The guitar solo has a nice theme, weaving through the narrative as Maccagnone recounts a vision on the Mackinac Bridge, “My head hit the curb, I was in another world, the giant Cross from Indian River, it was spinning and spinning, splashing blood and tears all over me,” the lyrics paint, a vivid resurrection that ends with the singer coming alive in a Rochester bar, picking his guitar, the place coming alive.
Though the song runs 5’35”, it would benefit from one more big chorus at the end—it’s kinda abrupt, but that abruptness might work well live, a thing the band has been planning to get together for from all around the world. The big chorus expresses love for Michigan, easy to the ears and truly identifiable, making it a worthy continuation of the peak of Big Sexy’s “My Temporary Silence” single. In Michigan, Maccagnone feels the most comfortable in his singer-songwriter role, his vocals natural and a treat to listen to.
Big Sexy don’t chase trends—they forge paths with authentic vibe, and “Michigan” is their latest triumph.
This is a road back to life, a ballad that roars with American heart.
In our era, where music often feels disposable, Big Sexy’s storytelling reminds us of the best times in music, slow rock with country vibes that hits the heart and stays there.
